GUANG CHEN - Ph.D. in Psychology

What is your professional / educational background and what is your Ph.D. Topic?
Before coming to France, I was a teacher in China. In 2006 – 2007 I did my Master's in Tours. After having finished my Master's, I enrolled in the Ph.D. In 2008 – 2009 I interrupted my dissertation and returned to work for a year in China. In 2010, I re-enrolled in a Ph.D. My work is psychological (the scholastic rhythms of children).

How has the Ph.D. process been for you?
It was difficult because, for my dissertation, a major part was experiments. Having access to Chinese schools was difficult in spite of help from friends. Meeting people was the most important for me, I was lucky to meet my dissertation adviser and other generous people in France and in China.

What have you learned from this experience?
This experience brought me a lot of understanding about the scholastic rhythms of Chinese and French children.

What advice would you give to a student who was considering a Ph.D.?

You need to persevere, meet often with your dissertation adviser to have advice, talk often to others so as not to become discouraged.

What are you doing now?
I have not yet begun the job-search process.
