Engineering degree in Computer Sciences

The training program is based on scientific and technical knowledge and includes Human, Economic, Legal and Social sciences as well as English courses. A project based instruction enables students to master the complete software development cycle as well as real project management activities. These projects include research methodology and concrete research work. After graduating, students find an employment in various fields of computer science and IT/IS, in France or abroad.
 
  • Objectives

The training in Computer Science at Polytech Tours enables students to become highly qualified engineers in various fields of computer science in France or abroad. The training program provides real insight into:

- the workplace, through lectures given by professionals, improvement reviews, internships each year, collaboration projects and partnerships with major IT/IS companies (ATOS, SOPRA, SII, Apside, Arctique).
- research and innovation, thanks to extensive collaboration with the Computer Science laboratory of the University of Tours (EA 2101 with ERL CNRS 6305). Project topics are linked to research as early as year three of the training program.
- an international opening, with the possibility of internships abroad or studying for one semester in one of the numerous foreign universities, acting as partners of Polytech Tours
- the society, through social opening with specific and dedicated programs to help young student to discover science and computer science.

The competence based instruction is supported by improvement reviews. This competence based approach highlights major themes such as decision making and software engineering. The training program provides science courses as well as tuitions in systems, information systems, production management, networks and web. All the current domains of computer science are included: SOA and web services, distributed computing and parallel architecture, agile project management etc. 

In year five, students choose one of the following four majors: virtual reality, web and multimedia, health and disabilities, logistics and optimization.

A common set of courses in Human, Economic, Legal and Social sciences as well as English are also provided. 

After graduating, students can work in any field of computer science; they can apprehend and analyze complex problems, provide and implement innovative solutions. They can lead projects from the beginning to the end, and they are research and innovation minded. This project management based approach includes in practice: collective projects in year four, final year project in collaboration with research or industry in year five, and extensive collaboration with the Computer Science laboratory of the University of Tours.
 

  • Courses and content

The training program is based on transversal themes over three years. The core of the training is oriented towards software engineering based on sound scientific knowledge.

- Decision making: modeling and complex problem solving, this is the basis of the program’s scientific knowledge.
- Software engineering: formulation of end user requirements, project coordination including modeling, programming, platform knowledge - the complete software development cycle is taken into consideration.
- Hardware engineering: hardware fundamentals, application on Unix, distributed systems are at the core of this thematic
- Networks and Web: norms and protocols, IoS, Android, application web, SOA, cloud computing.
- Information system: this topic addresses data modeling, database implementation, interface with programming, but also datawarehouse abd BI.
- Production management: Image and signal processing, microcontrollers, robotics, people and flow management - this topic covers computer science within the industry.

The scientific and technical courses represent 80 % of the training program whilst the remaining 20 % include courses in Human, Economic, Legal and Social sciences and English.

Four minors are available during the final year. They are all based on specific qualifications of professors - researchers at the Computer Science laboratory of the University of Tours: web and multimedia, virtual reality, health and disabilities, logistics and optimization.

A pedagogy based on projects has a key role in the cursus as 15 % of the courses are based on it (final year project, collaborative projects...). They are a first step towards research and innovation for future engineers.

Internships (third, fourth and fifth year) complement the cursus. These training courses take place in companies with whom the school has partnership conventions (ATOS, SOPRA, APSIDE, SII, Arctique) or in computer science companies in France or abroad.

Polytech entrance examination:

- Foreign students from a country with a Campus France convention must apply via the Campus France-CEF website, from January 4th to February 24th, 2012 (countries with a Campus France convention can be found on Polytech Tours website).
- Foreign students from other countries must apply directly on Polytech Tours website from January 4th to February 24th, 2012.
