DUT Information-Communication OPTION Management of information and documents in organisations

This is a two-year Information Studies course leading to a higher national diploma, the DUT. There are numerous outlets for students having completed the two-year course, working in information centres in industry, NGOs or charitable organisations, wherever internal and external users require specialists to create, develop and master information of any kind as well as search for relevant information and act as strategic watchdog.
  • Objectives

We train professionals able to ensure the internal and external management of information in organisations (public or private companies, local authorities, charitable organisations etc.). Information professionals search, process, produce and disseminate different types of information – with an added value – with the aim of satisfying the information requirements of users and clients of the organisation in which they work. They must develop the ability to be methodological and possess good technical, organisational and relational skills. They must also have good general knowledge, writing skills as well and curiosity and rigour.

There are numerous outlets for students having completed the two-year course, working in information centres: this information could be administrative, legal, economic, financial, scientific, technical or industrial. If students decide to continue their studies, the two-year course is usually  followed by a third year Information Management course leading to a Licence (B.A.) Information Management at the IUT of Tours. Students may wish to transfer to another university to prepare a different degree (in economic intelligence, for example, audio-visual management, picture and video library management, records management etc.) and their DUT Information & Communication enables them to do this. Otherwise they may wish to sit one of the competitive examinations organised by the state sector, in order to become a specialised librarian or qualified assistant in conservation of libraries, national heritage or archives.

  • Contents and subjects studied

Over the two years, students follow lectures in economics, business economics, theories of information and communication, sociology and market survey techniques, contemporary history and institutions, geography and geopolitics, semiotics, principles of law, labour law, media laws and regulations, information systems management, as well as practical tuition in languages (English and a second foreign language), French, information technology, TV, sound and photographic techniques, electronic information management, information searching, web page creation, and all the librarianship skills such as cataloguing, indexing, and so forth. They also have conferences given by professionals on subjects such as quality and assessment, knowledge management, records management and archiving.

During the first year, students are expected to do a four-week work placement and one of eight weeks in the second year.

During their first year placement, the students are expected to observe the work of one or more specialists within an information centre or library. They must write a report of this experience and are assessed (by means of a grid) by the person in charge of the trainee.

In the second year, the student is monitored and aided by a tutor at the IUT, with whom he/she must keep in regular contact, and also by the person within the company whose responsibility it is to direct and guide the trainee throughout the placement. In the first instance, this entails defining the tasks the trainee is expected to carry out and then helping to decide what the major assignment of the placement is to be (usually a mission that will improve or enhance the services or the running of the centre). This assignment must be presented and analysed by the student by means of a mini-dissertation and defended in a viva voce in June. The work placement supervisor will be expected to assess the student’s performance and skills by way of a questionnaire which must be returned to the IUT as it forms part of the general evaluation of the work experience.
