Sociology is a scientific discipline that aims to better understand social reality and its complexity. The Sociology department of the François-Rabelais University of Tours also teaches anthropology (comparative study of societies and cultures) and demography (study of the dynamics of populations and on their renewal).

On a theoretical level, students are progressively taught to acquire the fundamental sociological and anthropological processes that the whole of a society goes through; they are also taught to understand the social relationships at work in the various spheres of social life.

As regards methodology, students are offered the opportunity to acquire and to master tools for collecting and for processing qualitative and quantitative information and data.
