MASTER Written Heritage and Digital Publication (vocational M2)

This professional M2 combines a fundamental understanding of the Renaissance written heritage with emerging issues pertaining to its conservation, valorisation and diffusion, placing particular emphasis on digital publishing. Bringing together the highest-level academic competency in book history with the latest technological developments in the treatment of both old and new written heritage, it provides essential competencies for careers in publishing (classic and digital), archiving, libraries and research.
 

  • Objectives

Backed by a research centre reputed for its excellence – the CESR (Centre d’Études Supérieures de la Renaissance) – the teaching programme of this degree aims to provide students with:

1. A thorough mastery of the fundamentals of all aspects of book and text production, conservation and diffusion, ranging from palaeography to digital technology, and including the history of books, publishing, libraries and archives. Necessarily drawing on numerous domains – literature, philosophy, modern and ancient languages, history of art, cultural history, etc., – the acquisition of this knowledge is favoured by the active interdisciplinarity which characterises the CESR. The wide scope of the teaching programme ensures the transmission of a thoroughly grounded historical perspective, as well as an acute appreciation – subject to constant updating – of the rapid evolution the field is currently undergoing due to technological innovation.

2. A comprehensive introduction to the techniques employed in the production, dissemination, conservation and valorisation of written heritage. The students will acquire writing skills, become familiar with digital publishing technology (notably, word-processing and desktop publishing software, and cataloguing and indexing software and formats), master script and image digitalisation and gain a general understanding of the legal and economic aspects of the publishing market, as well as of the management of public institutions concerned with the conservation and  dissemination of written material.

3. Concrete experience in the production and diffusion of the different forms of written heritage, including classic and digital publishing, conservation work, library-related professions, cultural mediation, etc. This experience will be acquired through courses given by professionals, then validated in the field, with each student undertaking a 3-6 month internship in one of the various professional sectors targeted by the degree: publishing, libraries, digitalisation, etc. (The CESR currently holds a list of more than sixty French and European enterprises and institutions who have hosted students enrolled in this master's degree.)

  • Admission requirements

The admissions process involves two stages: a preliminary selection is made on the basis of written applications; final selection follows an interview with the teaching staff. The number of places is limited to 20 (approximately 50-60 applications are submitted each year). Selection criteria include the candidates' motivation, the coherence of their projects, their level of general culture, their mastery of the basic skills required in the field, their software skills and the quality of their written and oral expression.
