MASTER in Applied Foreign Languages (Languages and International Trade)

The Master’s degree in Languages and International Trade allows students to find work in the tertiary sector (national and international business, tourism, management, logistics, human resources, etc.). The degree course covers three areas: English, another language (German, Spanish or Italian) and subjects related to the functioning of a company (Law, Economics, Management, Marketing, Information Technology [IT], and Communications). Students spend their first semester abroad and the final one on a work placement (either in France or abroad).
  • Objectives
PEDAGOGICAL AIMS - elements to be acquired:
- Linguistic skills: competence in three languages (French, English and a choice between German, Spanish and Italian).
- Professional skills: competence in subjects applied to the running of a company (law, economics, management, marketing, Information Technology and communication skills.)
- General skills which can be applied to any professional domain. These include :
• the ability to analyse a complex problem
• the ability to look for a solution either individually or as part of a team
• the ability to present both in written form and orally, in three languages, the result of the analysis and the proposed solution.

The pedagogical strategies which have been set up are as follows (not an exhaustive list): Teaching methods making use of TICE (video and IT) in particular but not exclusively in the university's CRL (Language Resource Centre) where students can work either autonomously or in groups in which teaching can be adapted to the levels of each individual. The resources include:
• Reading material: work files, newspapers, specialised journals, self-correcting exercise manuals, dictionaries.
• Video: with foreign TV channels. DVD players
• Audio: listening to CDs, DVDs, and IPod.
• Information technology: with CD ROMs, specialized software and internet access
• Conversations: thematic workshops, intensive oral expression.

The Language Resource Centre (CRL) is equipped for the preparation of international language certificates (TOEFL, TOEIC ...)

Other methods used include the following:
• experience of concrete situations and of carrying out case studies
• role play (business negotiations and buying and selling)
• training in consecutive translation (interpreting)
• periods abroad and work placements in business companies.

Jobs can be found in all branches of international trade (e.g., Agricultural produce, industry) which require a good grounding in foreign languages (commercial departments of French or foreign companies with outlets in import-export)

Departments of industrial or tertiary companies (communications, marketing, logistics, transport).

Banks (commercial departments, international departments)

To attain these objectives, the programme of studies is organised according to three equally balanced domains:
Indispensable for international exchanges.

2. ANOTHER LANGUAGE: choice between German, Spanish and Italian.
The programme includes the following:
- Study of contemporary language in all its forms (written, oral, comprehension, expression) using non-literary supports (newspaper articles, radio and TV programmes, internet.....)
- Area Studies (history, geography, economics, politics, social studies...). These courses concern mainly contemporary aspects as it is vital to know about the way of life of partner countries in order to collaborate efficiently with them.

NB: No literature, linguistic theory or ancient history.

These are indispensable if the diploma is to lead to a job and will consist of beginner-level courses in:
- Law
- Economics
- Management and Marketing
- Iinformation technology
- Communication


These courses are taught by French, British, American, German, Spanish, South American and Italian teachers with the regular collaboration of professionals from outside the University.

At the beginning of the degree course, it is obligatory for the last semester to take place abroad. Students can either do a work placement in a company or continue to study at a partner university (Western Europe, North or South America, Japan, India, Korea, South Africa, Australia, Taiwan...)

The second semester of Year 2 consists of a work placement, in France or abroad.
